In 2007, the unwed Lance Corporal Lauterbach was allegedly raped, and impregnated, by a married Corporal (the next higher rank in the Marine Corps). But the rape investigation had "gone
sour" according to her mother. Still, the Corporal was afraid his career would be ruined if she gave birth and it was proven that her child was his. (Prenatal paternity testing had not
been developed yet.) So, he tried to convince the Lance Corporal to flee to Mexico (his country of birth), supposedly with the intent of destroying her credibility with the desertion
and continuing his career in the Corps. But that plan failed. He got increasingly desparate, because she was due to deliver in January. So in December, he sacrificed his offspring by
murdering Lauterbach at his house. He tried to destroy the evidence by burning their bodies in the fire pit in his backyard. But that didn't work too well. So, he fled to Mexico.
Her burned remains were found, and he was captured and sentenced to life in prison. [Dalesio, Emery P. (August 25, 2010). "Laurean sentenced to life in prison". Marine Corps Times.
